👻 Reported Activity

With centuries of history behind it, it’s no surprise that St Nicholas Priory is said to be haunted. What will you encounter?

Perhaps the angry spirit of a man of the cloth who still roams the halls? Many have reported mysterious noises from the kitchen, the smell of tobacco, and eerie spirit box communications.

During previous visits, we’ve experienced direct interaction with equipment—and even met a spirit who really doesn’t like women in one of the rooms!

🏰 A Glimpse into History

Once a Benedictine monastery, now a Grade I listed museum, St Nicholas Priory is steeped in Exeter’s fascinating past.

Founded in 1087, the Priory flourished through the 12th and 13th centuries, acquiring land and building new monastic structures. The monks offered hospitality to pilgrims and travellers, and the Priory became a lively hub within the city.

In 1536, King Henry VIII ordered the dissolution of the smaller monasteries, and the monks were pensioned off as much of the site was dismantled. Between 1575 and 1602, the remaining buildings were transformed into an Elizabethan townhouse.

Purchased in 1913, the Priory was restored to showcase its original monastic architecture and reopened as a museum in 1916. Today, it remains open to the public, beautifully furnished as an Elizabethan townhouse.
