Many people have claimed to have heard eerie whistling in the Fort's extensive underground passageways, which may belong to a legendary whistling gunner! Tales of this story have been spoken about for decades around Weymouth, and Fort has a passageway dedicated to him! A white figure is often seen walking the walls of the building when it is locked, and no one is there. Staff at the fort are also reported to refuse to visit certain areas by themselves! On recent visits, we have had great spirit box sessions, doors closing, interaction with equipment, and guests.

History 
In 1860, a civil engineering contractor was awarded the contract to build this historic place and was built in 1872. It is constructed on three levels. The lowest level is called the Magazine Level and was designed to store gunpowder and shells. The middle level, which was the Gun Deck Level, was designed to house 12 heavy muzzle loaded cannons and provide accommodation for the soldiers who manned the cannons. Lastly, the top level formed the ramparts and provided a raised platform that could be used to fire muskets and light muzzle loaded cannons during an attack. Located at the entrance to Weymouth Harbour and overlooking Portland Harbour, the Nothe Fort was built to protect the Naval Harbour at Portland. Now, a museum, it explores how advances in military design and technology altered the Fort until it was decommissioned in 1956.
