The Museum of East Dorset-Wimborne Minster
23rd March 2024
It is said that there are books that have fallen off shelves, footsteps being heard to strange anomalies caught on camera! Could this be a mischievous spirit! Come and join us as we investigate the strange goings on in this amazing location!
On our last visit we had Intelligent responses using equipment, guests being touched and cold spots.
The Museum of East Dorset is located in the heart of the market town of Wimborne Minster. Originally an ironmonger’s business, Hilda Cole’s inherited it from her father, Tom Frank Coles, who passed away in 1953. She longed to fulfil the wish to turn the building, known as the Priest’s House, into a museum which she did 7 years later on the 31st July 1962.
Over the years it has been transformed and made larger to accommodate some amazing displays, from the local DR Sir Ernest Kaye Le Flemming, which include objects that had belonged to him that were displayed at Dorset County Museum that returned to Wimborne when the time was right.
It also showcases a wealth of social and local history materials dating from the 1700s through to the 2000s. There are 35,000 objects that relate to the domestic life, childhood, trades, and agriculture of the local area. The collections include rare archaeological artefacts, some of national significance, a photographic archive dating back to the 1850s, clothing and other items that tell the story of East Dorset.
From an Iron Age skeleton exhibiting unique evidence of tuberculosis – to date the earliest known case of TB in Britain. Artefacts from the Romano-British villa at Tarrant Hinton, including one of only two Roman force pumps known in Britain. To a toy collection, with items dating from the early 1800s to the present day, including an early Steiff ‘blank-button’ bear. This is just some of the collections that are held here today with many more to see.
