Within the walls of a beautiful grade 2 listed building in Salisbury there is so much history. Originally built in 1254 then rebuilt in the 15th century. Originally the residence of one of the canons. 1568 it became the storage place for the robes of the bishop of Salisbury, hence where the name came from The Wardrobe or other wise know as The Rifles. After a series of time the house was let out to non clerical tenants.
In the 18th century the Cole’s family decided to divide the upper and lower halls, forming an entrance hall, stair case another hall and a dining room. This is how the building looks to this day. In the 1830s they added the east front, gables, barge boards and gothic portico. Residents include a doctor who's grand daughter was born here and died at the house in 1941. Used as a training college for school mistresses until 1969. The house stood empty for a few years. In 1973 the cost of the repairs was thought to be to high to repair but in 1976 a chance meeting with John Smith, saved the building as he offered to contribute with the cost and then he was given a 99 year lease. Finally finished in October 1980. Almost all the ground floors became a museum and the upper floors became offices, a library, store spaces and other facilities.
In 1982 the museum was officially opened but HRH The Prince Philip, coronal-in-chief the Duke of edinboroughs Royal regiment. It now houses a unique collection telling stories of all the services that have served there Monarch and country over many centuries and many wars.
With books flying off the shelves to loud footsteps being heard and the laughter of children…… on previous visits we had great interaction with equipment. Intelligent responses. What will you discover?? 👻👻👻
