History
Dorchester prison completed in 1975 was built on the site of an old medieval castle dating back to 1154. The remains including a mosaic can be seen at Dorset museum.
Operating as a prison for over 300 years originally held men and women segregated by sex and conviction. All prisoners were confined in cells except debtors who were confined in dormitories and had access to a day room. Later becoming a male only prison which closed in 2013.
The last women to be hanged at the gates of the prisons was Elizabeth Martha brown in 1856. The last person to be hanged in Dorset was at the prison gates was James seale in 1858. Both of which found guilty of murder.
Human remains including that of Elizabeth Martha Brown were buried on the prison grounds. After a plan to exhume them was made the remains were investigated and reburied. Could their spirits still remain trapped in the prison!
