History

Chard Guildhall is a Grade 2 listed building originally built in 1834-35 to replace the original Guildhall and market. Designed by a local architect in Classical Style, the building had a combined use of town hall, market house, and corn exchange. The buildings clock was installed in 1837 to celebrate Queen Victoria's accession to the throne. The interior was remodelled during the 70s. During the 90s, exterior renovations took place. The building is now used by Chard Town Council as offices and a community building.

The infamous judge jefferies has links to the town where 12 rebels were hanged. The hanging tree was situated where tescos is.
